5 Minute Walking Zone Map for Parents & Carers
Currently around 55% of families across the city walk to their Early Years setting*, and our 5 Minute Walking Zone Map is a way to try and encourage more families to walk to nursery, or to walk at least part of the way, if they are able to.
*Survey carried out by the Road Safety team at Brighton & Hove City Council June 2015
The Department of Health recommends that children of pre-school age who are capable of walking unaided should be physically active daily for at least 180 minutes (3 hours), spread throughout the day.
See http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/fitness/Pages/physical-activity-guidelines-for-children.aspx
Physical activity is likely to occur mainly through unstructured active play but may also include more structured activities, including walking to the shops, to a friend’s house, to the park, or to and from nursery.
If you need to drive to nursery, why not try using our 5 Minute Walking Zone map. You could park outside the 5 minute walking zone, and walk the last 5 minutes. You may not be able to do this every day, but maybe you could start by doing this once a week?
This will help keep the area around the entrance to our nursery clearer of cars parking and manoeuvring, making it safer for everyone, as well as keeping everyone more active!
If you come to nursery by bus, why not get off the bus a couple of stops early, and walk the last 5 minutes?
If you walk to nursery already, why not use the idea of a 5 minute walking zone for other journeys you make by car or bus, or even make your own 10 or 15 minute walking zone for other journeys.
